Bringing Clean Water and Sustainable Livelihoods to Somalia’s Cross-Border Communities
In the arid and semi-arid regions of Mandera, Somalia, communities are facing an urgent crisis. Years of recurrent droughts and flash floods have devastated local water sources, leaving over 100,000 people without access to safe drinking water. Rural communities in Mandera East and Lafey Sub-counties are in dire need of clean water, agricultural resources, and support to build resilient livelihoods. Your help can change lives by supporting the rehabilitation of critical water infrastructure and enhancing sustainable livelihoods.
The Situation: Due to climate change, the Mandera Triangle faces severe humanitarian challenges. Droughts are destroying crops and livestock, and floods are washing away critical infrastructure like boreholes and wells. With each passing season, more families are left without access to safe drinking water, food security, and economic stability. These challenges disproportionately affect women and children, who are forced to walk long distances to fetch water, often risking their safety.
Key Facts:
- Over 85% of the population in Mandera relies on boreholes as their primary source of water. However, 50% of these boreholes are non-functional due to damage from floods.
- In villages like Bella, families have been without a functional water source for over three years.
- Communities are resorting to drinking from contaminated rivers, leading to increased health risks.
- The primary source of income in these regions is livestock and farming, but without water, these livelihoods are rapidly deteriorating.
How You Can Help:
Your contribution will directly fund:
- Rehabilitation of Boreholes: Restoring damaged boreholes, including solarization and pump installation, to provide sustainable, reliable water access to over 25,000 people in key villages like Bella, Aresa, and Qumbiso.
- Water Infrastructure Projects: Construction of new water points such as water pans and distribution systems in underserved areas like Libehia and Lethi.
- Climate-Smart Livelihoods: Supporting farmers through training on sustainable agricultural practices like drip irrigation and soil conservation to improve food security and reduce vulnerability to climate change.
- Safe Water for All: Ensuring safe drinking water through community-managed water points, improving sanitation, and reducing waterborne diseases.
